TVR’s M-Series was the first clean-sheet design from the Martin Lilley era as head of TVR. In many ways it brought TVR from cottage builder status to full-fledged sports car manufacturer. Its look was sleek and modern by early ‘70s standards—influenced heavily by the Tuscan V8. Introduced in 1972, base models carried a 1.6L Ford inline-4 and were designated the 1600M. A 6-cylinder option came in the form of the 3000M which carried a Ford “Essex” 3.0L V6, but it was available only in Europe as it was not certified for US emissions standards. TVR substituted the 2.5L inline-6 from the Triumph TR6 and re-dubbed it the 2500M for the US market. That changed in 1976, when the M-series received a mild facelift featuring a redesigned front end and new tail lights. More importantly, the Essex V6 became available to US buyers for the first time late that year when California-based Olsen Laboratories reworked it to meet US emissions. With its more powerful engine the ’76-79 3000M had performance to match its upgraded looks, and helped make the M series the best-selling model in TVR’s history.
